Ingredients
Scale
- ¾ cup (170g) unsalted butter, softened
- ¾ cup (150g) granulated sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon almond extract, optional
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon cream of tartar
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 2 cups (248g) all purpose flour
- ½ cup (113g) unsalted butter, softened
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 3 cups (339g) powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1–3 tablespoons (5-15ml) milk or heavy whipping cream
- Sprinkles and/or food coloring, if desired
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a 9×13-inch pan with foil and spray it with nonstick cooking spray.
- In a stand mixer with the paddle attachment, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar. Mix in the egg and both extracts (almond extract is optional for enhanced flavor).
- Add in the baking soda, cream of tartar, and salt, then gradually mix in the flour until just combined.
- Press the dough evenly into the prepared baking pan.
- Bake for 14-19 minutes until the edges are golden and the center appears slightly undercooked. Allow to cool completely before frosting.
- To make the frosting, beat softened butter until creamy. Gradually mix in salt and powdered sugar until crumbly. Then add vanilla and 1 tablespoon of milk or cream, mixing until smooth, adding more milk if needed. If coloring the frosting, add food coloring now.
