  • Total Time: 1 hour
  • Yield: 6 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 tablespoons butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 6 tablespoons flour
  • 2 cups chicken broth OR stock
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon ground mustard powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • 4 cups shredded OR chopped cooked chicken
  • 1 ½ tablespoons poppy seeds, DIVIDED
  • 24 round butter crackers, such as Ritz
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted & slightly cooled
  • Cooked rice or egg noodles, for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. In a large, oven-proof skillet, melt the butter over low heat. Add minced garlic and sauté until fragrant.
  2. Stir in the flour and whisk continuously for 1 minute. Gradually whisk in the chicken broth and milk until well combined. Raise the heat to medium, whisking constantly until the sauce bubbles and thickens.
  3. Lower the heat and whisk in garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, mustard powder, and salt. Add freshly ground black pepper to taste. Mix in sour cream until smooth, then fold in the chicken and 1 tablespoon of poppy seeds until blended. Season as desired and smooth the mixture.
  4. Place butter crackers in a plastic bag, crush them coarsely, then add remaining poppy seeds and melted butter. Shake until the crumbs are well coated.
  5. Spread the cracker mixture evenly over the chicken in the skillet. Bake for 20 minutes or until bubbly, then serve over rice or noodles.
