  • 2 medium yellow onions, peeled and quartered
  • 1 large apple, cut in half
  • 1 large lemon, cut in half
  • 2 cups chicken broth (for roasting pan)
  • 3 cups turkey drippings and chicken broth (for gravy)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (for gravy)
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper (for gravy)
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder (for gravy)
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder (for gravy)
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch (for gravy)
  • 4 tablespoons cold water (for gravy)

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 425°F and adjust the rack to the lowest position.
  • Remove the turkey from packaging, check cavities, and pat dry.
  • Mix butter with salt, garlic powder, thyme, rosemary, sage, onion powder, and black pepper.
  • Spread herb butter underneath the skin and over the turkey's exterior.
  • Stuff turkey cavity with carrots, onions, apple, and lemon.
  • Tuck wings under the bird and truss drumsticks.
  • Pour chicken broth around the turkey in the roasting pan.
  • Insert meat thermometer in the thickest part of the breast.
  • Reduce oven temperature to 350°F and roast until internal temperature reaches 165°F.
  • Let turkey rest for at least 30 minutes before carving.
  • Prepare gravy by straining drippings and combining with broth and roux.
