- 3/4 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg, room temperature
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour, plus extra for rolling
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon red food coloring
- 1 cup powdered sugar (for glaze)
- 1–2 tablespoons warm water (for glaze)
- 1 tablespoon melted butter (for glaze)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional for glaze)
Instructions
- Beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add egg and vanilla, mixing well.
- Whisk dry ingredients together in a separate bowl.
- Combine dry mixture into wet mixture until just combined.
- Color half of the dough with red food coloring.
- Form marbled dough by rolling the colors together.
- Chill wrapped dough in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour.
- Preheat oven and prepare cookie sheets.
- Roll out dough, cut into shapes, and place on sheets.
- Bake until lightly browned and set at edges.
- Cool cookies on a wire rack.
- Prepare glaze and coat cookies, allowing to dry.
