  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 (21 oz) can cherry pie filling (plus more for garnish if desired)
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups (1 pound) powdered sugar, sifted
  • 24 tablespoons milk
  • Food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 325°F (160°C) and grease an 8 or 9 x 2½-inch heart-shaped cake pan.
  • In a large bowl, mix dry cake mix, eggs, baking powder, vanilla, almond extract, and half of the cherry pie filling until just moistened.
  • Transfer the batter to the prepared pan and level the top.
  • Bake for 65-75 minutes for heart-shaped pan or 40-45 minutes for 9×13 pan until a toothpick comes out clean.
  • Cool completely in the pan before transferring to a serving platter.
  • For frosting, blend softened butter, vanilla, and almond extract; gradually add powdered sugar, and mix with milk for desired consistency.
  • Frost the cooled cake and garnish with additional cherry pie filling, if desired.
  • Decorate with mini chocolate chips or colorful sprinkles.
  • Pipe designs with any remaining frosting for a creative touch.
